Construction to commence on £9m Bristol care home
07 April 2022

The project, built on behalf of care home operator Cornerstone, borders on the districts of Hengrove, Bishopsworth and Knowle and will see Real create a specialist care home split over two and three storeys.
Once completed, Cornerstone will operate the scheme, which forms part of the redevelopment of the current Imperial Park – a long-standing retail park built on the former site of the historic Imperial Tobacco Factory.
The site is already home to numerous retail stores, a housing development and supermarket on the northside of the park. The care home will stand between these two schemes, effectively completing the park.
The project will see a brand new later living facility created, which will include 80 en-suite bedrooms, office spaces, lounge areas, hairdressing amenities, a commercial kitchen, laundry facilities and a rooftop terrace. The home is specifically designed in accordance with dementia-friendly acoustics and appropriate for the complex needs of Cornerstone’s residents.
The ’green’ building, designed by care sector specialists Northstar, is being built to a certified BREEAM Excellent standard and will include air-source heat pumps to back up gas boilers and an array of photovoltaic cells on the flat roof, to promote environmental sustainability in the running of the home.
Andy Heyes, Regional Director at Real, South West, said:
“It is fantastic to be starting on site at Imperial Park. The later living facility marks yet another great addition to our portfolio and not only do we intend to provide an excellent scheme, but one that goes above and beyond to meet the needs of our ageing population.”
Cornerstone’s CEO, Johann van Zyl, said:
“Now more than ever we are all aware of climate change. At Cornerstone we are committed to reducing our carbon-footprint and this exciting and innovative project paves the way for the future of care home development. Real and Northstar are experts in their field, and we know that they will provide us with the best environment for the complex needs of our residents.”
